Biodiversity Conservation in the Kashmir Himalaya: Integrating Ecological Research, Climate Change Adaptation, and Sustainable Management
The Kashmir Himalaya represents one of the world’s most ecologically significant mountain ecosystems and forms an integral part of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. Characterized by remarkable altitudinal gradients, varied climatic conditions, and heterogeneous habitats, the region harbors exceptional floral and faunal diversity, including numerous endemic, rare, threatened, and medicinal species. The Kashmir Himalaya provides invaluable ecosystem services such as freshwater resources, carbon sequestration, climate regulation, soil conservation, pollination, and livelihood support for millions of people. However, increasing anthropogenic pressures, climate change, habitat fragmentation, unplanned urbanization, unsustainable tourism, overexploitation of natural resources, invasive alien species, and environmental pollution have accelerated biodiversity loss throughout the region. Climate-induced glacier retreat, altered precipitation patterns, rising temperatures, and increased frequency of extreme weather events further threaten ecosystem stability and species survival. Recent advances in ecological research, conservation biology, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), environmental DNA (eDNA), molecular ecology, artificial intelligence, and climate modelling have significantly improved biodiversity assessment, monitoring, and conservation planning. Integrating scientific research with ecosystem-based management, community participation, traditional ecological knowledge, and adaptive climate strategies is essential for ensuring long-term conservation of the Kashmir Himalayan ecosystems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on biodiversity patterns, ecological significance, climate change impacts, conservation challenges, emerging technologies, policy frameworks, and sustainable management approaches in the Kashmir Himalaya. It further highlights future research priorities for strengthening biodiversity conservation while promoting sustainable development in one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive mountain landscapes.
