Genetic Diversity and Crop Improvement: Current Trends and Future Perspectives for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture
Genetic diversity constitutes the fundamental basis of biodiversity and plays a critical role in crop improvement, ecosystem resilience, and global food security. However, rapid genetic erosion caused by habitat degradation, climate change, agricultural intensification, and the widespread adoption of genetically uniform cultivars threatens valuable plant genetic resources. The conservation and utilization of crop genetic diversity are essential for developing resilient, high-yielding, and nutritionally enhanced varieties capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions. Recent advances in molecular markers, genomics, omics technologies, genome editing, and artificial intelligence have revolutionized the assessment and exploitation of genetic variation for crop improvement. Crop wild relatives, landraces, and underutilized species represent important reservoirs of adaptive genes for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. This review highlights the importance of genetic diversity in agricultural biodiversity, methods for diversity assessment, conservation strategies, modern breeding approaches, and emerging technologies for sustainable crop improvement. Future perspectives emphasize integrating biodiversity conservation with precision breeding and climate-smart agriculture to ensure food and nutritional security.
